When the true teacher's kindness flows, watch what happens. When the teacher is kind, your deepest wishes are fulfilled. When the teacher is kind, grief loses its grip on you. When the teacher is kind, pain can't reach you. When the teacher is kind, you taste the Love of the One.
When the teacher is kind, why would you ever fear death? When the teacher is kind, your whole being rests in peace. When the teacher is kind, the truest treasures are yours. And when the teacher is kind, you melt right into the True One.
This Pauree is one of the most beautiful in the whole Vaar, and its beauty is in its form: it is a litany, the same phrase repeated eight times like a refrain or a heartbeat — when the True Guru is merciful. Each line begins there, and then names another gift that flows from that single source. The repetition is not monotony; it is the point. Everything — every blessing the soul could want — flows from one thing: the mercy, the grace, the kindness of the Guru.
Watch the gifts unfold: desires fulfilled... never grieve... know no pain... enjoy the Lord's Love... why should you fear death... the body always at peace... the nine treasures obtained... absorbed in the True Lord. It is a near-complete inventory of the soul's longing — the end of grief, the end of pain, the end of the fear of death (answering, directly, the fear that the previous shaloks named), the deepest treasures, peace, love, and finally union itself. And the Pauree's whole structure insists that none of these is achieved by the soul's own effort. Each one begins not with when I try hard enough but with when the True Guru is merciful. They are all gifts, all grace, all flowing from the teacher's kindness rather than the disciple's striving.
This is the heart of the matter that the whole Vaar has circled: the spiritual life is not, finally, a self-improvement project. You do not earn the fulfillment of your desires, conquer your own grief, defeat your own fear of death, and win your way to union by force of will. These come when the True Guru is merciful — when grace flows. The soul's part is not to manufacture these blessings but to put itself in the way of the grace that gives them: to serve, to turn toward the teaching, to open. And then, like sunlight on a person who has simply stepped out of the shade, the whole litany pours down — desires met, grief gone, pain gone, fear gone, peace, treasure, love, and the final melting into the One. Read it slowly, like the prayer it is; let each when the True Guru is merciful land, and feel how completely the soul's good rests not on its own straining but on grace.
What in your spiritual life are you trying to force by effort that might, instead, simply need you to step out of the shade and let grace flow?
