I have met the teacher — the true Yogi, the timeless One — and I am overflowing with delight in that love.
The teacher is soaked through with love of the One and rests always in perfect peace. By great good luck I met the all-knowing One, and now my whole being, mind and body, is drenched in love.
This verse shares the joy of meeting the Guru, and says the whole self gets soaked in love.
Gur jogee purakh mili-aa rang maanee jee-o — I have met the Guru, the jogee, the timeless One, and I am full of joy in His love. Guru Ram Das calls the Guru the true jogee. Yoga means "joining," so a jogee is one who is joined to the One. Many people in India walked the path of the jogee through hard outer practices. Here the Guru shows what being joined really looks like: a life full of love. Sadaa nirbaanee — the Guru rests always in nirbaan, a deep, unbroken peace.
Meeting such a Guru is not like signing a form. It is like getting caught in the rain. Mayraa man tan har rang bhinnaa — my mind and body are bhinnaa, soaked through, in the One's love. This picture of being soaked shows up again and again in Guru Ram Das's songs. Love of the One is not just an idea in the head. It is a downpour that drenches the whole self, mind and body together. Think of running out into the first big rain of summer and coming back dripping and laughing. Meeting the true Guru is like that: the dry heart made wet, and the whole self full of joy.
What would it mean for love of something good to soak your whole self, not just live as a thought in your head?
