The Five Troublemakers and the Dream

ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਕਾਇਆ ਸੰਘਾਰਹਿ ॥

The five demons destroy the body.

He dies and dies again, only to be reincarnated; he does not contemplate the Shabad.

antar maa-i-aa moh gubaaraa ji-o supnai suDh na ho-ee hay. ||11||
The darkness of emotional attachment to Maya is within his inner being; as if in a dream, he does not understand. ||11||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Five restless pulls inside us, anger, greed, pride and their friends, can wear a person down.

Lost in them, a heart keeps circling and circling, never quite waking.

It is like being asleep inside a dream, not yet seeing what is here.

The five inner troublemakers keep us dreaming; waking up sets us free.
The deeper layer

The five (panch doot) are inner impulses. Being caught in them is spiritual sleep, a dream from which one has not yet woken.

A Question to Sit With

Which of the five pulls (anger, greed, pride, and their friends) do you notice most?
