Verse 13 of 16

The Restlessness of the Turned-Away Mind

manmukh bhoolaa tha-ur na paa-ay.
The confused, self-willed manmukhs find no place of rest.
jo Dhur likhi-aa so karam kamaa-ay.
They do those deeds which they are pre-destined to do.
bikhi-aa raatay bikhi-aa khojai mar janmai dukh taahaa hay. ||13||
Imbued with poison, they search out poison, and suffer the pains of death and rebirth. ||13||

In plain words

When a heart turns only to itself, it keeps searching and never quite finds a resting place.

Chasing what leaves a bitter aftertaste keeps the restlessness going round and round, until something gentler is chosen.

A heart turned only inward on itself never quite finds rest.
The deeper layer

The self-turned mind, the manmukh, wanders and finds no resting place. Steeped in what tastes bitter, it keeps looking for more of the same, and the pain goes round. A gentler choice can break the circle.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you settle when your mind keeps circling?
