Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 118
Verse 2 of 16

The Mind That Turns Toward Home

gurmukh manoo-aa ulat paraavai.
The mind of the Gurmukh turns away from the world.
gurmukh banee naad vajaavai.
The Gurmukh vibrates the Naad, the sound current of the Guru's Bani.
gurmukh sach ratay bairaagee nij ghar vaasaa paa-idaa. ||2||
The Gurmukh, attuned to the Truth, remains detached, and dwells in the home of the self deep within. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The heart that faces the One gently turns down the noise of the world.

Humming with the Word, it stays calm and unhurried, at home in the quiet room deep inside.

A heart at home inside itself does not need the world to be loud.
The deeper layer

Detachment here is steadiness, not withdrawal. The Bani becomes the mind's inner music, and the home of the self, nij ghar, is a steady place deep inside.

A Question to Sit With

Where is the quietest, most at-home place inside you?
