That humble being, who searches within himself, through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, sees the Lord with his eyes.
ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਏ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਨਦਰੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥
gi-aan anjan paa-ay gur sabdee nadree nadar milaa-idaa. ||4||
Through the Guru's Shabad, he applies the ointment of spiritual wisdom to his eyes; the Gracious Lord, in His Grace, unites him with Himself. ||4||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The one who looks honestly inside, guided by the Guru's Word, comes to see the One with their own eyes.
It is as if a healing ointment of understanding is smoothed over the eyes, and the kind One draws them close.
Understanding is like an ointment that clears the inner eye.
Anjan (a soothing eye-ointment) of gian (wisdom) is applied to the inner eye — a favorite Gurbani image for the awakening of true sight. Seeing follows searching within; the gracious One does the uniting.
