Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 126
Verse 14 of 16

More Than Just the Robes

bahutay bhaykh karay bhaykh-Dhaaree.
Many disguise themselves with religious robes.
bin sabdai ha-umai kinai na maaree.
Without the Shabad, no one has conquered egotism.
jeevat marai taa mukat paa-ay sachai naa-ay samaa-i-aa. ||14||
One who remains dead while yet alive is liberated, and merges in the True Name. ||14||

In plain words

Many people put on the outfits and outward signs of being holy. But no costume, from any tradition, quiets the me-first feeling on its own — only the word does that.

The one who lets the small self grow still, while fully alive, becomes free and blends into the True Name.

No costume quiets the ego; only the inner word does that.
The deeper layer

Robes and outward signs (bhaykh) leave the ego in place; only the Shabad conquers haumai. Jeevat marai — dead while alive — is jeevan-mukti, freedom while fully living.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you see people mistaking the outward look of something for the thing itself?
