Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 133
Verse 8 of 9

The Word Woven Through Everything

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਭ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥
gur kee banee sabh maahi samaanee.
The Word of the Guru's Bani is contained in all.
ਆਪਿ ਸੁਣੀ ਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥
aap sunee tai aap vakhaanee.
He Himself hears it, and He Himself repeats it.
jin jin japee tay-ee sabh nistaray tin paa-i-aa nihchal thaanaaN hay. ||8||
Those who meditate on it, are all emancipated; they attain the eternal and unchanging home. ||8||

In plain words

The Guru's Word lives inside everyone.

The One hears it, and the One speaks it.

All who remember it are carried across. They find a home that never moves.

The Guru's Word lives in everyone, and carries all who remember it home.
The deeper layer

The Guru's words live inside everything.

Gur kee banee means the Guru's Word, the sacred songs. The verse says they are sabh maahi samaanee, soaked into everything, not just written on a page.

Then a surprising line: the One both speaks the words and hears them. Speaker and listener are one.

Think of singing in the shower. You are the one singing, and you are also the one listening. The song goes out and comes right back to you.

Everyone who held these words with love was nistaray, carried safely across, like a boat carrying people over a wide river. They found nihchal thaanaaN, a home that cannot be shaken. That home is not a building. It is a steady heart.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you sense meaning living in the world itself, not just in books?
