Third Mehl:
ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਕਰੇ ਆਪਿ ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
aap upaa-ay karay aap aapay nadar karay-i.
He Himself creates and He Himself acts; He bestows His Glance of Grace.
ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥
aapay day vadi-aa-ee-aa kaho naanak sachaa so-ay. ||2||
He Himself grants glorious greatness; says Nanak, He is the True Lord. ||2||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The One makes everything and moves within everything that is made.
The same One casts a glance of grace and lifts a heart into greatness.
Nanak says: this glory is a gift given, never a prize earned, and it flows from the True One alone.
The greatness a heart receives is always a gift, never a wage.
A short shalok of the Third Mehl restating the aapay theme: creation, action and the bestowing of grace are all the One's single doing. Greatness is granted by the 'Glance of Grace' (nadar), always given, never earned.
