ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੩ ॥
salok mehlaa 3.
Shalok, Third Mehl:
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਭੈ ਕੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਬਿੰਦ ॥
jin ka-o andar gi-aan nahee bhai kee naahee bind.
Those who do not have spiritual wisdom within, do not have even an iota of the Fear of God.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਇਆ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਰਣਾ ਜਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ॥੧॥
naanak mu-i-aa kaa ki-aa maarnaa je aap maaray govind. ||1||
O Nanak, why kill those who are already dead? The Lord of the Universe Himself has killed them. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Some hearts have no inner wisdom yet, not even a spark of awe; they are like people asleep to life.
There is no need for blame or ill-will toward them.
Nanak says: their sleep is already its own loss; leave them gently to the One, who alone can wake them.
There is no honor in striking what has already fallen; leave it to grace.
A shalok of the Third Mehl. 'Why kill those who are already dead?' A heart with no wisdom and no awe has already lost so much; there is nothing to gain by striking at it. Leave such people, without contempt or ill-will, in the One's hands.
A Question to Sit With
How can you meet someone who is closed-off without closing your own heart?
