ਡਖਣੇ ਮਃ ੫ ॥
dakh-nay mehlaa 5.
Dakhanay, Fifth Mehl:
ਮੁਖਹੁ ਅਲਾਏ ਹਭ ਮਰਣੁ ਪਛਾਣੰਦੋ ਕੋਇ ॥
mukhahu alaa-ay habh maran pachhaanado ko-ay.
All speak with their mouths, but rare are those one who realize death.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨਾ ਖਾਕੁ ਜਿਨਾ ਯਕੀਨਾ ਹਿਕ ਸਿਉ ॥੧॥
naanak tinaa khaak jinaa yakeenaa hik si-o. ||1||
Nanak is the dust of the feet of those who have faith in the One Lord. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Everyone talks, but only a few feel how precious and brief this life is.
Nanak says, I would gladly sit in the humble dust at the feet of those who trust the One.
Knowing life is short is exactly what wakes you up to live it.
A Dakhanay shalok. To know death is to grasp how precious and short a life is — and that knowing makes a person live wide awake.
A Question to Sit With
What would you do more of if you remembered life is precious?
