Make the One Your Friend

mehlaa 5.
Fifth Mehl:
hikas kooN too aahi pachhaanoo bhee hik kar.
Yearn for the One Lord, and make Him your friend.
naanak aasrhee nibaahi maanukh parthaa-ee lajeevdo. ||3||
O Nanak, He alone fulfills your hopes; you should feel embarrassed, visiting other places. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Long for the One, and make that One your closest friend.

Nanak says: the One fills your hopes; you never have to go begging elsewhere.

With the right Friend, you never have to go begging elsewhere.
The deeper layer

A Dakhanay shalok. Knocking on other doors for what the One already gives would only bring a blush of shame. The One is enough, so you can stand tall.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like to have a friend who is enough?
