Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 148
Verse 4 of 5

Free, and Seeing Truth Everywhere

ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਜਿਹ ਬੂਝਿਆ ਆਸਾ ਤੇ ਭਇਆ ਨਿਰਾਸੁ ॥
gur parsaad jih boojhi-aa aasaa tay bha-i-aa niraas.
Whoever understands, by Guru's Grace, becomes free of hope in the midst of hope.
ਸਭੁ ਸਚੁ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਇਆ ਜਉ ਆਤਮ ਭਇਆ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥੩॥
sabh sach nadree aa-i-aa ja-o aatam bha-i-aa udaas. ||3||
One comes to see the Lord everywhere, when the soul becomes detached. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whoever understands, by the Guru's grace, lets go of wanting, even with hopes all around.

When the heart stops clinging, you see Truth everywhere you look.

Let go of grasping, and you begin to see the One in everything.
The deeper layer

'Gur parsaad jih boojhi-aa' — understanding comes by grace, not by force. 'Aasaa tay bha-i-aa niraas' is the beautiful paradox of becoming free of grasping-hope in the very midst of hope; and 'sabh sach nadree aa-i-aa' — then Truth (what is true) is seen everywhere. Detachment here is clear-eyed seeing, not coldness.

A Question to Sit With

What might you notice about the world if you stopped chasing and simply looked?
