You and I, No Longer Two

ਮਨ ਆਦਿ ਗੁਣ ਆਦਿ ਵਖਾਣਿਆ ॥
man aad gun aad vakhaani-aa.
Within my mind, I chant the Name of the Primal Lord God, the Source of virtue.
ਤੇਰੀ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸੰਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tayree dubiDhaa darisat sammaani-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
My vision, that You are I are separate, has melted away. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In my mind I say the Naam of the First One, the source of all goodness.

The sense that You and I are two has melted away.

The line between you and the One is thinner than it looks.
The deeper layer

The feeling that "You are over there and I am over here" can melt away.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the whole shabad.

Jai Dayv keeps inside him the Name of the First One, gun aad, the source of every good thing. All goodness comes from one spring.

Then comes the heart of it. Dubidhaa means "two-ness," the feeling of being split apart. Here it is the sense that the One is far away and separate from me. And that feeling melts.

Think of frost on a window in the morning. It looks like a wall between you and the garden. Then the sun comes up, the frost melts, and you see there was never really a wall at all.

That is what Ik Oankaar means, "the One Creator in everything." The separation was never the real thing. Only the One was.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt completely un-separate from everything around you?
