Kabir, Maaroo:
ਰਾਮੁ ਸਿਮਰੁ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿਗਾ ਮਨ ॥
raam simar pachhutaahigaa man.
Meditate in remembrance on the Lord, or else you will regret it in the end, O mind.
paapee jee-araa lobh karat hai aaj kaal uth jaahigaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O sinful soul, you act in greed, but today or tomorrow, you will have to get up and leave. ||1||Pause||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Remember the One, O mind, or you will be sorry later.
O wayward heart, you keep grabbing for more, but today or tomorrow you must get up and leave.
Remember the One now, while there is time.
Remember the One now, while there is time.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Raam simar pachhutaahigaa man — remember the One, O mind, or you will regret it. Paapee jee-araa lobh karat hai — the wayward heart keeps grabbing. Aaj kaal uth jaahigaa — today or tomorrow, it gets up and leaves. The visit here is short. Think of a sleepover: morning comes, and you pack up and go home.
A Question to Sit With
What would you do differently if you remembered how short the visit is?
