Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 159
Verse 3 of 4

What Counts on That Day

When the Messenger of Death comes and grabs you by the hair, and knocks you down, on that day, you shall be powerless.
simran bhajan da-i-aa nahee keenee ta-o mukh chotaa khaahigaa. ||2||
You do not remember the Lord, or vibrate upon Him in meditation, and you do not practice compassion; you shall be beaten on your face. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When death comes and takes hold of you, on that day nothing will be in your power.

If you have not remembered the One, sung to the One, or been kind, you will suffer for it.

What you carry at the end is what you practiced: remembrance and kindness.
The deeper layer

On the last day, nothing is in our hands. Ja-o jam aa-ay kays geh patkai — when death comes and seizes a person by the hair, taa din kichh na basaahigaa — on that day, nothing is in your power. Simran bhajan da-i-aa — remembering the One, singing to the One, and kindness: these are what count. Without them, mukh chotaa khaahigaa — the blows fall on the face. Remembrance and kindness are what a person carries.

A Question to Sit With

What is one kind thing you could practice today?
