In plain words

The One takes the side of the humble and makes them His own.

He guards the honor of those who come to Him; whoever reaches His shelter is kept safe.

Nanak says: grace was poured out on me, and the Naam was set like a jewel inside my heart.

Reach for shelter, and you are already held.
The deeper layer

The One holds the humble close.

Har angeekaar karay: the One "takes them to His own side." Angeekaar means to hug someone close and claim them as your own.

The One guards the honor of those who serve. Whoever comes for shelter is kept safe.

Think of a little kid who trips in front of everyone at a school show. Before anyone can laugh, a parent scoops them up and holds them close. The child did not earn that hug. It was simply given.

The verse ends with Nanak, the name all the Gurus use to sign their songs. Grace was poured on him, and he set the Name inside his heart like a jewel. Shelter is given, not earned.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you feel safest, and who helps you feel that way?
