Renouncing the Lord, the Support of the earth, you wander, deluded by doubt; you are engrossed in emotional attachment, associating with Maya, the slave-girl. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O friend, such is the foolish thing you do.

You let go of the One who holds up the whole earth, and wander, lost in doubt.

You get wrapped up in clinging, keeping company with Maya, the shine of passing things.

Hold on to the One who holds you up, and let what only passes float by.
The deeper layer

It is a big mix-up: holding on to what passes, and letting go of what holds us up.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

Sarangdhar means "the One who holds up the earth." That One is our real support. But we let go of that support. We wander, confused by bharam, which means doubt. And we get wrapped up in moh, clinging to things, and in Maya, the shine of what does not last.

Think of letting go of the railing on a moving bus to grab a balloon floating past. The balloon drifts away, and now you are wobbling.

The verse calls this i-aanath, foolishness. We could call it a mix-up. And a mix-up can be put right.

A Question to Sit With

What is a steady support in your life you want to hold onto?
