Glad to Belong, Linked Where You Place Me

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
maaroo mehlaa 1.
Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਮੁਲ ਖਰੀਦੀ ਲਾਲਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ਸਭਾਗਾ ॥
mul khareedee laalaa golaa mayraa naa-o sabhaagaa.
I am Your slave, Your bonded servant, and so I am called fortunate.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਚਨੀ ਹਾਟਿ ਬਿਕਾਨਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੧॥
gur kee bachnee haat bikaanaa jit laa-i-aa tit laagaa. ||1||
I sold myself at Your store in exchange for the Guru's Word; whatever You link me to, to that I am linked. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I count myself lucky to belong to You, heart and hands.

I gave myself over gladly in exchange for the Guru's Word.

Wherever You set me to work, there I gladly go and give my best.

Belonging fully to what you love can feel more free, not less.
The deeper layer

The image of the laalaa (bonded servant) sounds harsh in English, but here it means glad, willing belonging, the freedom of no longer being pulled a hundred ways by the ego. To be linked where You place me is trust in Hukam, the flow of existence, rather than exhausting self-steering.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you gladly give yourself to?
