When Restlessness Becomes a Doorway

ਇਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਉਪਜੀ ਘਟ ਮਹਿ ਜਬ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨਨ ਅਨੁਰਾਗਿਓ ॥

When this anxiety arises in the heart, then, one comes to love the Guru's feet.
sufal janam naanak tab hoo-aa ja-o parabh jas meh paagi-o. ||2||3||
My life becomes fruitful, O Nanak, only when I am absorbed in the Praises of God. ||2||3||

In plain words

Sometimes an unsettled feeling stirs inside.

That very feeling can turn me toward the Guru, like being drawn home.

Nanak says: my life fills up and blossoms the moment I lose myself in singing the praises of the One.

Even restlessness can point you home.
The deeper layer

Even a worried feeling can turn into a doorway.

Chintaa means worry, or a restless feeling in the heart. Here that restlessness does something good. It wakes up love for the Guru's feet. Bowing at someone's feet is an old way of showing humble love and trust.

Think of feeling a little lost on the first day at a new school. That uneasy feeling is what sends you looking for a friendly face. Then you find one, and suddenly the whole place feels like home.

Then the life becomes sufal, which means "full of fruit," like a tree heavy with apples. Guru Tegh Bahadur ends this shabad on hope. When we lose ourselves in praising the One, a life blossoms.

A Question to Sit With

Has an uneasy feeling ever nudged you toward something good?
