avgan subhar gun nahee bin gun ki-o ghar jaa-o.
I am full of faults, and I have no virtue at all. Without virtues, how can I go home?
sahj sabad sukh oopjai bin bhaagaa Dhan naahi.
Through the Word of the Shabad, intuitive peace wells up; without good destiny, the wealth is not obtained.
jin kai naam na man vasai say baaDhay dookh sahaahi. ||2||
Those whose minds are not filled with the Naam are bound and gagged, and suffer in pain. ||2||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I do not have to earn my way home by being perfect first.
Through the teaching, an easy peace rises up on its own, like a gift. When the Name fills the heart, the tight knots of sorrow loosen and let go.
You do not earn your way home; peace is given as you receive the Name.
Avgan subhar, gun nahee: full of faults, with no virtue to show. The question of how to go home is answered by grace, not merit. Sahj sabad sukh oopjai: through the Word, peace rises on its own. Where the Naam does not live in the heart, a person stays bound in pain; where it does, the knots loosen.
A Question to Sit With
When has peace arrived without you forcing it?
