Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 67
Verse 3 of 9

However You Hold Me, I Rest

ਜਿਉ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਰਹਾ ਜੋ ਦੇਹਿ ਸੁ ਖਾਉ ॥
ji-o too raakhahi ti-o rahaa jo deh so khaa-o.
As You keep me, I remain; whatever You give me, I eat.
ਜਿਉ ਤੂ ਚਲਾਵਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਚਲਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਉ ॥
ji-o too chalaaveh ti-o chalaa mukh amrit naa-o.
As You lead me, I follow, with the Ambrosial Name in my mouth.
ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ॥੨॥
mayray thaakur hath vadi-aa-ee-aa mayleh man chaa-o. ||2||
All glorious greatness rests in the hands of my Lord and Master; my mind yearns to unite with You. ||2||

In plain words

However You keep me, I am content; whatever You place before me, I take with thanks.

Wherever the flow of life leads, I follow with the Name on my lips. All good things rest in Your hands, and my heart leans toward You, longing to be close.

Contentment is trusting the way you are held and led.
The deeper layer

However You keep me, I am content.

Ji-o too raakhahi ti-o rahaa — as You keep me, so I stay. Jo deh so khaa-o — whatever You give me, I eat. This is deep trust in hukam, the One's will.

Mukh amrit naa-o — the nectar-sweet Name is on my lips as I walk. Mayleh man chaa-o — my mind longs, with joy, to be joined with You. Think of a small child riding on a parent's shoulders at a fair. The child does not worry about the way. The child just enjoys the ride.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to fully trust that you are being taken care of?
