Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 67
Verse 8 of 9

Even the Dull Can Turn to Gold

ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਊਜਲੇ ਸਭ ਮੈਲੁ ਭਰੀਜੈ ॥
mayray parabh bhaavan say oojlay sabh mail bhareejai.
They alone are pure, who are pleasing to my God; all others are soiled with filth.
ਮੈਲਾ ਊਜਲੁ ਤਾ ਥੀਐ ਪਾਰਸ ਸੰਗਿ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
mailaa oojal taa thee-ai paaras sang bheejai.
The filthy become pure, when they meet with the Guru, the Philosopher's Stone.
ਵੰਨੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਲਾਲ ਕੀ ਕਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੭॥
vannee saachay laal kee kin keemat keejai. ||7||
Who can estimate the value of the color of the true jewel? ||7||

In plain words

A heart tuned to the One shines clear; without that, it can gather a film of dust.

But here is the hope: touch the Guru, the stone that turns metal to gold, and the dull becomes bright again. The color of that true jewel is worth more than anyone can measure.

One touch of the Guru can turn the dullest heart bright.
The deeper layer

Anyone can shine again.

Mayray parabh bhaavan say oojlay — those who please my God are bright and clean. Others get covered in grime. Mailaa oojal taa thee-ai paaras sang bheejai — the dirty become clean when they touch the paaras. The paaras is the magic stone from old stories that turns plain metal into gold. Here, the Guru is that stone.

So no one is ever written off. Think of an old, dull spoon polished until it shines. Vannee saachay laal kee kin keemat keejai — who could ever put a price on the color of that true jewel?

A Question to Sit With

When has something dull in your life turned bright again?
