Growing Older with the One Held Close

biraDh bha-i-aa joban tan khisi-aa kaf kanth birooDho nainhu neer dharay.
He grows old, his body and youth waste away, and his throat is plugged with mucous; water flows from his eyes.
ਚਰਣ ਰਹੇ ਕਰ ਕੰਪਣ ਲਾਗੇ ਸਾਕਤ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਰਿਦੈ ਹਰੇ ॥੭॥
charan rahay kar kampan laagay saakat raam na ridai haray. ||7||
He feet fail him, and his hands shake and tremble; the faithless cynic does not enshrine the Lord in his heart. ||7||

In plain words

As the years pass, the body slows: the step gets less steady, the hands less sure. That is simply part of being human, and it deserves tenderness, not fear.

The gift is this: a heart that has kept the One close all along stays warm and steady, even as everything else changes.

Bodies change with the years; a heart that holds the One stays steady.
The deeper layer

A heart that holds the One stays steady through every season.

BiraDh bha-i-aa — a person grows old. The young body tires. The eyes water, the feet slow down, the hands begin to shake. This comes to everyone who lives a long life, and it calls for love and care.

The saakat, the one turned away from the One, keeps raam out of the heart. Keeping the One in the heart is what steadies a life while the body changes.

Think of an old tree. Its bark grows rough and its branches bend, and its deep roots keep it standing through every storm.

A Question to Sit With

How can you treat older people, and someday yourself, with tenderness?
