Don't Gamble Your Days Away

ਰਾਜੰ ਰੰਗੰ ਰੂਪੰ ਮਾਲੰ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਤੇ ਜੂਆਰੀ ॥
raajaN rangaN roopaN maalaN joban tay joo-aaree.
In power, pleasures, beauty, wealth and youth, one gambles his life away.
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਬਾਧੇ ਪਾਸੈ ਖੇਲਹਿ ਚਉਪੜਿ ਏਕਾ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
hukmee baaDhay paasai khayleh cha-uparh aykaa saaree. ||4||
Bound by the Hukam of God's Command, the dice are thrown; he is just a piece in the game of chess. ||4||

In plain words

It is easy to pour all your days into power, looks, money, and being young — and wake up wondering where they went.

We each move like a piece on a great board, carried by the flow of life. The wise player keeps the One in view.

Do not gamble all your days on things that do not last.
The deeper layer

Raajan rangan roopan maalan joban — power, pleasures, beauty, wealth, youth — are named as the things one can joo-aaree, gamble a life away on. The chess image (hukmee baadhay paasai... aykaa saaree) shows us moved by the hukam, the flow of existence, like pieces on a board. Not a grim fate, but an invitation to play well by keeping the One in view.

A Question to Sit With

What is something worth giving your time to that you will still be glad about years from now?
