Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 80
Verse 7 of 8

The Brave One Who Conquers the Self

ਜੋ ਸੂਰਾ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਹੋਇ ਮਰਣਾ ॥
jo sooraa tis hee ho-ay marnaa.
He alone is a warrior hero, who remains dead to the world.
ਜੋ ਭਾਗੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਜੋਨੀ ਫਿਰਣਾ ॥
jo bhaagai tis jonee firnaa.
One who runs away will wander in reincarnation.
ਜੋ ਵਰਤਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਭਲ ਮਾਨੈ ਬੁਝਿ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਲੀਐ ॥੭॥
jo vartaa-ay so-ee bhal maanai bujh hukmai durmat jaalee-ai. ||7||
Whatever happens, accept that as good. Realize the Hukam of His Command, and your evil-mindedness will be burnt away. ||7||

In plain words

The hero is the brave one who has conquered their own ego, dead to the pull of me-first.

Running away only sends the heart wandering.

Whatever comes, welcome it as good; understand the One's will, and crooked thinking burns away.

The bravest victory is over your own ego.
The deeper layer

The bravest fight is the one inside you.

Maaroo is the raag of warriors. But here the only battle worth winning is against the ego, the me-first voice. Jo sooraa tis hee ho-ay marnaa — the true hero is the one who is "dead to the world." That means the ego has let go. It is not about beating an enemy.

Jo bhaagai tis jonee firnaa — the one who runs away keeps wandering, round and round. Think of a level in a video game that you skip. It keeps coming back until you face it.

Jo vartaa-ay so-ee bhal maanai — whatever happens, take it as good. This means trusting the flow of life, the rain and the sunshine alike. Bujh hukmai — understand the Hukam, the One's will, the flow of all that is. Then durmat, small and crooked thinking, burns away.

A Question to Sit With

What would it mean to win the battle inside yourself today?
