From My Parents' Meeting, a Wonder Was Made

ਮਾ ਕੀ ਰਕਤੁ ਪਿਤਾ ਬਿਦੁ ਧਾਰਾ ॥

From the union of the mother's egg and the father's sperm,

The blessings of light all come from You; You are the Creator Lord, pervading everywhere. ||4||

In plain words

From the meeting of my mother and my father, this body of astonishing beauty was formed.

Every spark of light and life in me is a gift from You.

You are the Maker, and You are everywhere I look.

My very body is a gift and a wonder, made of light from the One.
The deeper layer

Every person is a wonder made by the One, and every bit of life in us is a gift.

The verse speaks plainly. A child's body forms from the meeting of the mother and the father. From that small beginning comes a form of amazing beauty. Moorat soorat kar aapaaraa — a shape and a face beyond measure.

Then the verse turns to thank the Maker. Jot daat jaytee sabh tayree — every light and every gift is Yours. Too kartaa sabh thaa-ee hay — "You are the Creator, everywhere."

Think of a baby's tiny hand, with its perfect little nails. Nobody drew it or built it. It grew. Parents are part of the story, and they are part of the gift. But the spark of life inside comes from the One. That is something to be amazed by, every day.

A Question to Sit With

What is something about your own body that seems amazing when you stop to think about it?
