Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 85
Verse 10 of 16

Freedom Is Not Bought With Rituals Alone

karam Dharam kar mukat mangaa-ee.
Practicing religious rituals, they sought liberation,
mukat padaarath sabad salaahee.
but the treasure of liberation comes only by praising the Shabad.
bin gur sabdai mukat na ho-ee parpanch kar bharmaa-ee hay. ||10||
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, liberation is not obtained; practicing hypocrisy, they wander around confused. ||10||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Some did every ceremony hoping it would set them free.

But the treasure of freedom comes through praising the Guru's Word.

When a practice is only for show, the heart stays restless; when it is full of love, it comes alive.

The same practice can be empty for show or alive with love.
The deeper layer

A practice done only for show leaves the heart restless; the same practice filled with love comes alive. Mukat padaarath sabad salaahee: the treasure of freedom comes through praising the Word.

A Question to Sit With

What makes something you do feel alive instead of just going through the motions?
