Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 86
Verse 15 of 16

Wandering Away, and the Gentle Way Back

gurmat chhodeh ujharh jaa-ee.
Abandoning the Guru's Teachings, some wander in the wilderness.
manmukh raam na japai avaa-ee.
The self-willed manmukhs are destitute; they do not meditate on the Lord.
pach pach booDheh koorh kamaaveh koorh kaal bairaa-ee hay. ||15||
They are ruined, destroyed and drowned from practicing falsehood; death is the enemy of the false. ||15||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I set the Guru's teaching aside, I can wander off into an empty place.

Following only my own mind, I do not remember the One, and I am poor inside.

Living by what is false wears me down until I sink; death is the enemy of what is false.

The Guru's teaching keeps me on the path; what is false only wears me down.
The deeper layer

Leaving the Guru's teaching, a person wanders into emptiness and feels poor inside. Living by falsehood wears a person down until they sink, and death stands against what is false.

A Question to Sit With

What is a small thing that helps you turn back when you have drifted off course?
