Dark Hair Turns Silver, So Store the Lasting Thing

kaalee hoo fun Dha-ulay aa-ay.
Their black hair eventually turns grey.
vin naavai gath ga-i-aa gavaa-ay.
Without the Name, they lose their wealth, and then leave.
durmat anDhulaa binas binaasai moothay ro-ay pookaaraa hay. ||9||
They are evil-minded and blind - they are totally ruined; they are plundered, and cry out in pain. ||9||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Slowly, gently, dark hair turns silver, and the years go by.

If all we ever gathered was the kind of treasure that stays behind, we leave with empty hands.

But the Naam is a treasure that no one can carry off and nothing can take — so gather that, and you are rich.

Gather the treasure that no one can ever take from you.
The deeper layer

Kaalee hoo fun Dha-ulay aa-ay — black hair turns white. The years pass for everyone. Outer wealth stays behind when we go; the Naam is the one treasure that travels with the soul.

A Question to Sit With

What is something valuable that isn't a thing you can hold in your hands?
