Verse 2 of 17

Keeping the One Near Keeps Peace Near

jis bisri-ai jam johan laagai.
If you forget Him, the Messenger of Death will catch sight of you.
sabh sukh jaahi dukhaa fun aagai.
All peace will be gone, and you will suffer in pain in the world hereafter.
raam naam jap gurmukh jee-arhay ayhu param tat veechaaraa hay. ||2||
Chant the Name of the Lord as Gurmukh, O my soul; this is the supreme essence of contemplation. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When we let the One slip from our minds, an uneasy restlessness can creep in.

The quiet peace we long for grows thin, both now and on the road ahead.

So say the Naam, my soul, following the Guru — this is the deepest thing your heart can hold onto.

Keep the One near, and peace stays near too.
The deeper layer

Forgetting the One thins our peace, now and on the road ahead. Saying the Naam as a Gurmukh (raam naam jap gurmukh) is the param tat, the highest essence to hold.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you keep close so you do not lose your sense of calm?
