Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 93
Verse 2 of 16

Two Travellers, Two Directions

vaykee vaykee jant upaa-ay.
He created the beings of different kinds.
du-ay pandee du-ay raah chalaa-ay.
The two travellers have set out in two directions.
gur pooray vin mukat na ho-ee sach naam jap laahaa hay. ||2||
Without the Perfect Guru, no one is liberated. Chanting the True Name, one profits. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One made living beings of every shape and kind.

Through life, we each set out as travellers, and there are two directions to go: toward our small selves, or toward the One.

The road home opens with the Perfect Guru, and saying the True Naam is the traveller's profit.

Every day we choose a direction: toward our small selves, or toward the One.
The deeper layer

Du-ay pandee du-ay raah — two travellers, two roads — the choice at the heart of the journey: toward the self or toward the One. Without the gur pooray (Perfect Guru) the way home stays closed; the True Naam is the traveller's profit (laahaa).

A Question to Sit With

Which direction did your choices point you in today?
