Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 96
Verse 14 of 16

When the One Chose, the World Began

jaa tis bhaanaa taa jagat upaa-i-aa.
When He so willed, He created the world.
baajh kalaa aadaan rahaa-i-aa.
Without any supporting power, He sustained the universe.
barahmaa bisan mahays upaa-ay maa-i-aa moh vaDhaa-idaa. ||14||
He created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva; He fostered enticement and attachment to Maya. ||14||

In plain words

Then, when the One chose to, the whole world sprang into being.

With no pillars to prop it up, the One held the universe steady.

The One brought forth the great powers of the old stories, and set in motion the pull of the world that makes us cling to things.

The whole universe stands with no pillars but the One.
The deeper layer

'Jaa tis bhaanaa taa jagat upaa-i-aa': creation begins with the One's own choice. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are created by the One (and so stand beneath it), and 'maya moh', the tug that makes us cling, is set in motion.

A Question to Sit With

What amazes you about how the world holds together?
