Raag Malaar
Commentary

Raag Malaar, Chaupade, Mehl 1 (Guru Nanak)

Rain down, clouds — the Beloved has come home.

The Arc

The homecoming half of the rain pair. It opens on the ache of not-yet-knowing, then bursts into reunion — rain down, the Beloved has come home; a love forever fresh; I am Yours and You are mine; the pure One found, so the heart is no longer tossed about; the only real adornment is a heart lit up; and the knots come untied.

Key Vocabulary

  • baras ghanaa mayraa pir ghar aa-i-aa — rain down, the Beloved has come home.
  • nautan preet — a love forever new.
  • niranjan / akul niranjan — the Immaculate One, beyond caste and lineage.
  • mukat — freedom; the knots of the heart untied.

Themes and Cross-Connections

Paired with the earlier baras ghanaa shabad, this is viraha resolved into homecoming. akul niranjan quietly sounds the caste-leveling note that runs through the whole tradition.

For Raag Malaar

The raag's promise fulfilled: separation turning to reunion with the rains, the peacock's cry answered by the cloud.

Translation Notes

The soul-bride and Husband Lord imagery is rendered as union and belonging. The ache (bilakh, niraasee, karam kee faasee) is kept as hopeful longing, never despair. The terrifying world-ocean (bhavjal) is softened to no longer being tossed about.
