Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The poison of ego has charmed the mind, and it carries a load as heavy as a huge python.

The One has placed the Word in its mouth, like a charm against snake poison, and has wiped out the poison of ego.

The heaviest load is thinking only of yourself, and the Word lifts it like a cure clearing poison.
The deeper layer

Ego is like poison, and the Word is the cure.

Ha-umai means ego, the voice that says "me first." Bikh means poison. The verse pictures ego as ajgar bhaaree, a huge, heavy python. Carrying it is like hauling a backpack full of rocks everywhere you go.

Then the cure arrives. Garurh sabad mukh paa-i-aa: the Word is placed in the mouth, like an old healing charm against snake poison. Ha-umai bikh har maaree: the One wipes out the poison of ego.

Ego here is a sickness to be healed.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you were carrying that felt lighter once you shared it?
