Verse 5 of 6

One In All, All In One

ਸਭਨਾਂ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੋ ਏਕੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥
sabhnaaN meh ayko ayk vakhaanai.
He preaches that the One Lord is within all beings.
ਜਾਂ ਏਕੋ ਵੇਖੈ ਤਾਂ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
jaaN ayko vaykhai taaN ayko jaanai.
As he sees the One Lord, he knows the One Lord.
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਬਖਸੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਸੋਇ ॥
jaa ka-o bakhsay maylay so-ay.
That person, whom the Lord forgives, is united with Him.
ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥
aithai othai sadaa sukh ho-ay. ||4||
He finds eternal peace, here and hereafter. ||4||

In plain words

They tell everyone that the One alone is inside all beings.

As they see the One, they know the One.

Whoever the One forgives is joined with the One.

They find peace forever, here and in the world beyond.

When you see the One in everyone, you are at peace everywhere.
The deeper layer

The true scholar sees the One living in everyone.

Sabhnaa meh ayko ayk vakhaanai: this person tells everyone that the One is inside all beings. Jaan ayko vaykhai taan ayko jaanai: seeing the One, they know the One. This is the heart of Ik Onkar, "there is One."

Think of many lamps in a house, all lit by the same electricity. They look different, but the light is one. The one whom the One forgives is joined with the One. And aithai othai sadaa sukh: there is peace here and beyond.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever noticed something you share with a person who seemed very different from you?
