A Thirst Nothing Else Fills

ਨਾਮਹੀਣੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ॥
naamheen binsai dukh paa-ay.
Lacking the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the mortal suffers and dies.
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਜਲਿਆ ਭੂਖ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
tarisnaa jali-aa bhookh na jaa-ay.
He is burnt in the fire of desire, and his hunger does not depart.
ਵਿਣੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
vin bhaagaa naam na paa-i-aa jaa-ay.
Without good destiny, he cannot find the Naam.
ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਥਾਕਾ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੩॥
baho biDh thaakaa karam kamaa-ay. ||3||
He performs all sorts of rituals until he is exhausted. ||3||

In plain words

Without the Naam, a person suffers and dies.

Burning in the fire of wanting, their hunger never goes away.

Without good fortune, the Naam cannot be found.

They do all kinds of rituals until they are worn out.

A deep thirst settles when the Naam arrives as a gift.
The deeper layer

Without the Naam, a hunger keeps burning that nothing else can fill.

Tarisnaa jali-aa bhookh na jaa-ay: burned by tarisnaa, thirst or craving, the hunger does not go away. It is like scrolling a phone for something good. One more video, then one more, and you still feel empty.

Baho biDh thaakaa karam kamaa-ay: a person tries every kind of ritual until worn out. The trouble is outward actions done without the heart. They cannot fill a thirst that lives on the inside.

Vin bhaagaa naam na paa-i-aa jaa-ay speaks of bhaag, good fortune: without it, the Naam is not found. The Naam comes as a gift. The thirst settles when the heart is open and the gift arrives.

A Question to Sit With

What is a longing in you that no amount of stuff seems to satisfy?
