Verse 3 of 5

The Name Sung Without A Sound

ਊਪਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਅਸਮਾਨਿ ਪਇਆਲਿ ॥
oopar dar asmaan pa-i-aal.
He is high above the sky, and beneath the nether worlds.
ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਕਹੀਐ ਦੇਹੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
ki-o kar kahee-ai dayh veechaar.
How can I speak of Him? Let me understand.
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਜੋ ਜਪੈ ਹਿਆਇ ॥
bin jihvaa jo japai hi-aa-ay.
In the heart, without the tongue is chanted,
ਕੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੈਸਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੨॥
ko-ee jaanai kaisaa naa-o. ||2||
who knows what sort of Name? ||2||

In plain words

The One is high above, at the door of the sky, and deep below, in the worlds beneath.

How can I speak of the One? Help me understand.

Some repeat it in the heart, with no tongue at all. Who knows what kind of Naam that is?

The Name can be sung silently, deep inside the heart.
The deeper layer

The One is higher than the sky and deeper than the depths, and can be remembered silently in the heart.

Oopar dar asmaan pa-i-aal: above the sky and below the lowest worlds. Ki-o kar kahee-ai: how can anyone speak of that? Bin jihvaa jo japai hi-aa-ay: the Naam can be repeated in the heart, with no tongue at all. Think of humming a song in your head while the room stays silent. The music is there; only you can hear it.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt something strongly without saying a single word?
