You do not understand the nature of death and liberation.
ਕੰਠੇ ਬੈਠੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥੧॥
kanthay baithee gur sabad pachhaanai. ||1||
You are sitting on the river-bank; realize the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You do not understand what death and freedom are.

You are sitting on the river-bank. Come to know the Guru's Word.

You're already sitting where understanding is waiting to be found.
The deeper layer

You are sitting right where understanding can be found. You just have to look.

Maran mukat gat saar na jaanai: you do not know the truth of maran, death, or mukat, freedom. We can go through life without understanding what matters most.

Kanthay baithee gur sabad pachhaanai: you are sitting on the river-bank; recognize the Guru's Word. The answer is not far off. It is right here, like a library book already sitting in your backpack.

This line sets up the story that follows, about a stork at the water's edge.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you're still trying to understand about life?
