Past The Three Moods

ਮਲਾਰ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
malaar mehlaa 3.
Malaar, Third Mehl:
ਬੇਦ ਬਾਣੀ ਜਗੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਕਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
bayd banee jag varatdaa tarai gun karay beechaar.
The world is involved with the words of the Vedas, thinking about the three gunas - the three dispositions.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜਮ ਡੰਡੁ ਸਹੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥
bin naavai jam dand sahai mar janmai vaaro vaar.
Without the Name, it suffers punishment by the Messenger of Death; it comes and goes in reincarnation, over and over again.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਪਾਏ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੧॥
satgur bhaytay mukat ho-ay paa-ay mokh du-aar. ||1||
Meeting with the True Guru, the world is liberated, and finds the Door of Salvation. ||1||

In plain words

The world is busy with the words of the Vedas, the old holy books, and keeps thinking about the three moods of nature: calm, restless and heavy.

Without the Naam, it suffers at the hands of death, and dies and is born again, over and over.

Meeting the True Guru, it is set free and finds the door to freedom.

Studying the surface isn't the same as arriving at the depth.
The deeper layer

Studying about the One is good, but it is not the same as meeting the One.

Bayd banee jag varatdaa trai gun karay beechaar: the world is busy with the words of the Vedas, the old holy books, and thinks about the trai gun. These are the three moods of nature: calm, restless and heavy. The warning is not against any tradition. It is about learning that stays on the surface, in any faith.

Without the Name, the verse says, life goes round and round. Think of a hamster on a wheel, running hard and getting nowhere. Meeting the True Guru opens the way past the surface. The door to freedom swings open, and the circling stops.

When have you learned lots of facts about something without understanding it deep down?
