Study Alone Doesn't Set You Free

tarai gun sabhaa Dhaat hai parh parh karahi veechaar.
The three dispositions are completely distracting; people read and study and contemplate them.
mukat kaday na hova-ee nahu paa-iniH mokh du-aar.
Those people are never liberated; they do not find the Door of Salvation.
bin satgur banDhan na tuthee naam na lagai pi-aar. ||6||
Without the True Guru, they are never released from bondage; they do not embrace love for the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||6||

In plain words

The three moods of nature pull the mind every which way, and people read and study and think about them.

Those people are never set free. They never find the door to freedom.

Without the True Guru, their ties never break, and they never come to love the Naam.

Learning about something isn't the same as being freed by it — love opens the door.
The deeper layer

Reading about something is not the same as being set free by it.

Trai gun sabhaa dhaat hai: the three moods of nature, calm, restless and heavy, keep us busy and distracted. People read and study them again and again. This is not a warning against study in any faith. It is about study that never reaches the heart.

Think of reading every book about swimming but never getting into the pool. Freedom comes with the Guru and a deep love for the Naam. Without that, we stay tied up, like a knot that won't loosen. Learning is a good start. Love is what opens the door.

A Question to Sit With

What's a difference between knowing about something and loving it?
