The Creator does all deeds; we eat the fruits as He ordains. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Nanak says: the things we do in the world's pull grow on a tree with two kinds of fruit, one sweet as nectar, one bitter as poison.
The Maker does all the doing. Each of us eats the fruit the Maker gives.
Your actions are a tree, and you will taste its fruit.
What we do grows like a tree, and the tree bears sweet fruit and bitter fruit.
Maa-i-aa karam birakh: the tree of actions done in maa-i-aa, the pull of the world. Its fruit is amrit, nectar, or vis, poison. Sabh kaaran kartaa karay: the Creator is behind all doing, and each of us tastes the fruit we are given. Both are held together here: the One moves everything, and our actions still bear fruit we taste.
