Shadows That Slip Away

ਰਾਜੁ ਮਾਲੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਛਾਂਵ ॥
raaj maal joban sabh chhaaNv.
Power, wealth and youth are all just shadows,
ਰਥਿ ਫਿਰੰਦੈ ਦੀਸਹਿ ਥਾਵ ॥
rath firandai deeseh thaav.
as are the vehicles you see moving around.
ਦੇਹ ਨ ਨਾਉ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
dayh na naa-o na hovai jaat.
Neither your body, nor your fame, nor your social status shall go along with you.
ਓਥੈ ਦਿਹੁ ਐਥੈ ਸਭ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੨॥
othai dihu aithai sabh raat. ||2||
In the next world it is day, while here, it is all night. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Power, riches and being young are all just shadows,

and so are the fine carriages you see rolling past.

Your body, your fame, your place in society — none of them go along with you.

Over there it is day; here, it is all night.

Many things we chase are shadows; carry what still shines when they fade.
The deeper layer

Power, wealth and youth pass like shadows, and body, fame and rank all stay behind.

Raaj maal joban: power, wealth, youth. All of it is chhaanv, shade, like carriages glimpsed for a moment and gone. Body, name and jaat, social rank, do not travel on. Othai dihu aithai sabh raat: over there it is day, here it is all night. The shadows belong to the night; the day beyond is bright.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that will still matter to you long after today's excitement fades?
