Raag Nat Naaraayan
Commentary

Raag Nat-Naaraayan, Shabad, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

Leaning on the good removes fear and heals ego; the inner fire quieted like a baby content with milk; the Saints as family; and the diamond that pierces the diamond of the mind.

The Arc

Pauri 0 (rahao): having the good for support removes fear of endings, brings peace, heals the ego-ache. Pauri 1: the inner fire quieted "as the baby is satisfied by milk"; the Saints become "mother, father, friends, brothers." Pauri 2: the doors of doubt open — "God's diamond pierces the diamond of my mind" — and the heart blossoms.

Key Vocabulary

  • The disease of egotism taken away (P0) — ego as an illness healed.
  • Satisfied like a baby by milk (P1) — a need met so fully the restlessness stops.
  • The Saints as family (P1) — good company as mother, father, friend, brother.
  • Diamond piercing diamond (P2) — only the pure/bright reaches the bright core of a heart.

Themes and Cross-Connections

"Satisfied like a baby by milk" is the raag's and tradition's tender simile (Wadahans B00C1178 "the baby and the milk," Bihaagraa B00C1140). "The Saints as mother-father-friend" restates Wadahans B00C1197 and B00C1207 P45 (the Name as family). "Diamond pierces diamond" is a striking Gurbani image (only like reaches like; compare Kabir's Diamond, Aasaa B00C1000). Ego-as-disease is the project's consistent framing.

For Raag Nat-Naaraayan

The warmest image here for a child is the fed and contented baby: when your deepest need is truly met, the restless, hungry, burning feeling inside simply stops — you're satisfied, the way a baby is satisfied by milk. And good, kind people can become like your very family — mother, father, friends, brothers, your help and support. It takes something bright and pure to reach the brightest, deepest part of you (only a diamond can cut a diamond) — and when it does, your heart blossoms with joy.
