Verse 4 of 5

It's Honest to Ask to Be Around Kind People

ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਭਗਤ ਹਰੇ ॥
vadbhaagee har naam Dhi-aavahi har kay bhagat haray.
Very fortunate are those who meditate on the Lord's Name; they alone are the Lord's devotees.
tin kee sangat deh parabh jaacha-o mai moorh mugaDh nistaray. ||3||
I beg for the Sangat, the Congregation; O God, please bless me with them. I am a fool, and an idiot - please save me! ||3||

In plain words

Lucky are the hearts that keep the good in mind — they're the real lovers of what's true.

"Please let me sit with good, kind people," the heart asks; "I feel small and lost — help me."

It's a good and honest thing to ask to be around kind people, especially when you feel small or lost.
The deeper layer

This one says: it is good and honest to ask to be around kind people.

First the verse blesses people who remember the good: vadbhaagee, "very fortunate." Then it turns to a humble request. The heart asks for sangat, which means good company, people who help you be your best.

The verse says, "I am a fool — please save me!" This is not name-calling. It is honest smallness: "I feel small and lost, help me." Think of a new student on the first day who asks to sit with the kind kids at lunch. That is a wise thing to ask. The deep wish here is simply to be among good people.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel small or lost, whose company helps you most?
