Sikhism·Raag Nat Naaraayan·Shabad 20
Verse 8 of 9

Carry the Good Breath by Breath

saas saas saas hai jaytay mai gurmat naam samHaaray.
With as many breaths as I have, I chant the Naam, under Guru's Instructions.
saas saas jaa-ay naamai bin so birthaa saas bikaaray. ||7||
Each and every breath which escapes me without the Naam - that breath is useless and corrupt. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

With every breath I have, I want to keep the good in mind.

A breath spent forgetting what matters feels like a breath quietly wasted.

You can carry the good with you breath by breath, so no moment slips by empty.
The deeper layer

A beautiful teaching of continuous remembrance: "with as many breaths as I have, I chant the Name... each breath which escapes without the Name is useless." The ideal of swaas swaas — remembering with every breath, so living itself becomes prayer, and no moment is wasted. For a child: you can carry the good with you breath by breath, so no moment slips by empty.

A Question to Sit With

What good feeling could you carry with you, quietly, all day?
