Please grant Your Grace; I am meek; I seek Your Sanctuary, God. Unite me with Your beloved, humble servants.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸੁ ਕਹਤੁ ਹੈ ਹਮ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੇ ਪਨਿਹਾਰੇ ॥੮॥੧॥
naanak daasan daas kahat hai ham daasan kay panihaaray. ||8||1||
Nanak, the slave of Your slaves, says, I am the water-carrier of Your slaves. ||8||1||

"Be kind to me; I'm small and I've come for shelter — let me be among good people."
"I'd gladly do the humblest task for them" — even carry their water.
A beautiful thing to wish for is simply to be among good people and gladly help them, even in small ways.
The Ashtapadee closes in humble longing for good company: "unite me with Your beloved servants... I am the water-carrier of Your slaves." The deepest wish isn't for greatness but to serve — even carrying water — among the good. The colophon (||8||1||) closes. For a child: a beautiful thing to wish for is simply to be among good people and gladly help them, even in small ways.
