Don't Wait for Trouble to Build in the Good

jab lag jee-o pind hai saabat tab lag kichh na samaaray.
As long as his soul and body are healthy and strong, he does not remember the Lord at all.
jab ghar mandar aag lagaanee kadh koop kadhai panihaaray. ||4||
But when his home and mansion catch fire, then, he wants to dig the well to draw water. ||4||

In plain words

While my body is strong and well, I forget what matters.

Then, when the house catches fire, I rush to dig a well for water!

Don't wait for trouble to start caring about what matters — build the good into your life now, before you need it.
The deeper layer

This one says: build the good into your life now, before hard times come.

"As long as his body is healthy and strong, he does not remember at all." Then: jab ghar mandar aag lagaanee — "when his home catches fire," only then does he want to dig a well for water.

That is far too late. You can't dig a well while the house is burning. Think of studying for a test. The night before is too late to learn a whole year. Keep the good close while things are easy, so it is there when you need it.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing is worth building into your life now, before you need it?
