Verse 4 of 9

Good Company Helps You Live the Wisdom You Preach

ਮਾਨੁਖੁ ਕਥੈ ਕਥਿ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਨਾਵੈ ਜੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਸੋ ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
maanukh kathai kath lok sunaavai jo bolai so na beechaaray.
The mortal speaks and by speaking, makes the people listen; but he does not reflect upon what he himself says.
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਦਿੜਤਾ ਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
satsangat milai ta dirh-taa aavai har raam naam nistaaray. ||3||
But when he joins the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, he is confirmed in his faith, and he is saved by the Name of the Lord. ||3||

In plain words

It's easy to say wise things to others and not really live them yourself.

But in good company, the wisdom sinks in and becomes real, and it steadies you.

It's easy to tell others wise things — good company helps you actually live them yourself.
The deeper layer

This one says: it's easy to tell others wise things, and good company helps you actually live them.

The verse is honest and a little funny. "A person talks and makes people listen, but does not think about what he himself says." It is easy to give good advice and not follow it.

"But when he joins the Satsangat, he is made steady." Satsangat means the true company, good people together. Think of telling your little sister to share, then grabbing the last cookie yourself. With good friends around, the wisdom sinks in, and you start to live what you say.

A Question to Sit With

What's the difference between saying something wise and truly living it?
