His loving devotion pleased my Lord and Master, who struck down and drove off the Messengers of Death. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A father who simply loved his son, and called his name, was lifted up by that love.

His love pleased my Master. The messengers of death were chased far away.

It's the love in your heart that reaches the good — even when it isn't perfect.
The deeper layer

This one says: it's the love in your heart that reaches the good, even when it isn't perfect.

The verse tells the old story of Ajaamal. He loved his son, whose name was Naaraayan. Naaraayan is also a name for the Divine. When Ajaamal called out to his son, he was calling that name too.

"His loving devotion pleased my Master," who "drove off the messengers of death." Ajaamal was not trying to pray perfectly. He just loved. Think of a little child drawing a wobbly picture for a parent. The parent treasures it, because of the love in it. Grace reads the heart, not the form.

A Question to Sit With

How is a heart full of love more important than doing everything perfectly?
